The Nottingham New Theatre

About The New Theatre

Based on University Park, Nottingham we are the only fully student run theatre in England. 2013 proved to be a ground-breaking year for us. The renovation of our building was completed, meaning we now have a beautiful new foyer, greatly expanded storage space, and two entirely new rooms which now form our two Studio spaces.

2013 also cemented our reputation of producing work of an outstanding quality, with an incredible three productions selected to be showcased at the prestigious National Student Drama Festival. We received a fantastic seven awards for our efforts, including three Judges’ Awards for Acting (Company), Acting in a Supporting Role, and Design, the Buzz Goodbody Student Director’s Award and two Spotlight Acting Commendations.

The 2016/17 academic year has been one of the best we’ve ever had at the Nottingham New Theatre. With the launch of NNT Unscripted and the expansion of StuFF, coupled with many fantastic In-House shows and one of the best Fringe seasons since it was launched in 2011, this year we’ve gone from strength to strength.

History

The New Theatre itself was converted from the Engineering block in 1969. Originally, the auditorium was levelled but raked seating and a proscenium arch stage were in place by 1972. The very first refurbishment of the auditorium occurred only one year after this, in the summer of 1973, when students installed a new lining of timber slats, a cloakroom area at the rear and locations for fire extinguishers. In 06/07 the black swirly logo was dropped for yellow/orange squares. In 07/08 they became orange/purple and in 09/10 they were neatened up in a brand overhaul, and in 10/11 a ‘banner’ system was introduced to ensure that every poster was clearly associated to the New Theatre. In 2016 the Nottingham New Theatre held it’s first Alumni Dinner, which coincided with our 50th Anniversary.

Committee

The theatre is a student run service within the University of Nottingham’s Students’ Union. A group of seventeen members is elected annually to run all aspects of the theatre both on a day to day basis and in the long term. They meet once a week in the form of a formal minuted meeting.

New Building

Over the summer of 2012 the Archaeology and Classics building, which the theatre was a part of, was demolished leaving us a free-standing theatre at the heart of the University.
